I agree completely that he is partly responsible for her injuries, although he himself told Steph he never wanted to see Spoiler again, but she went ahead and did it anyway. But I don't think he is responsible for her death, because he has trusted Leslie his whole life, and had she given Steph the medication she would have lived.

At first he blamed himself, but after discovering this he realised that he entrusted Steph with Leslie and this would have saved her. If the injuries were fatal even with treatment I'm sure he would have continued to blame himself, but the fact that his actions would have saved her I do believe it absolves him of the responsibility.

It was very simmilar to the situation with Jason, the simmilarities between the two as Robin were evident. But while Jason was angry, Steph only wanted to please. Batman realised after he left Jason alone that Jason was going to disobey him and go after the Joker, and he blamed himself for leaving Jason alone. Perhaps he should have realised Steph would also disobey his command at retirement. But in this instance she had no vendetta against someone as dangerous of the Joker for him to foresee. And unlike Jason, he saved Steph and she would have pulled through.

Perhaps it was his experience with Jason that made him so angry with Leslie. He thought he'd made another huge mistake and let a second Robin die, months later he discovers Leslie's been hiding her responsibility all this time and he would have actually saved her, leaving Jason as his biggest mistake and not making it all over again.

Still, if you do see it as completely out of character, perhaps that's in keeping with the writing of nearly all Batman related characters in DC over the last year or two: Such as Willingham's Drake acting 12 years old all over again just like he was in A Lonely Place Of Dying.

I read Batgirl #53 the other day: http://www.thebatsquad.net/thebatsquad/batgirl/053.htm

It's the only Batgirl issue I have ever bought because I openly despise the Cassie character. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Steph's involvement. Damnit, I want Tim Drake out of the role and given a Nightwing style upgrade (ie - become his own individual role) and have Steph back as Robin full time for ever and ever (or at least a few years)!

Failing that I want an amazing one shot set just before War Games with a good writer and artist! Someone who favours realism and detail like Patrick Zircher or Scott Hampton.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure I wont see either.
