Has anybody seen these things?!

User Image

I want to get one as a pet. Initial thought is, "Yuck! That's a rodent!" But then I thought about it. I had hamsters when I was little. Aren't they rodents too?

Anyway, I really want one. I'll keep it in the back yard and walk it with a leash.

What does it do? Other than the obvious, that is.

They send it to you when it's a few days old, however, it's born fully covered in fur and starts swimming the same day it's born. They spend half of their lifetimes in water. They only defacate in water. Obviously, you need a pool in the area you keep them. They eat grass, fruits and vegetables, favoring corn on the cob above all.

When they send them to you, they're sent in a pet carrier but since they're so young they're scared shitless. They stay as far away from the entrance to the carrier as possible. If you stick your hand in to try and get it out, it'll bite you. You have to dump it in the area you built the fence for it.

After you dump it, it's gonna try to ram the fence to get out and start running around like crazy. It won't even eat the first day(s). You have to feed them milk with small amounts of dog food in the milk for the first few months and you can bottle-feed them milk, too.

Eventually, they're supposed to get real friendly and get along with all the other pets you may have. Somehow, I doubt that my dog (chihuahua) is gonna get along with a giant rodent however much the rodent might want to get along with her.

Also, you should put a heater in there with it because it's from South America and, although they do play in snow, they need the heat eventually.

Fun Fact: In Venezuela, the capybara is considered something other than meat since it swims like seafood so they're game for dinner on Good Friday... and, yes, they do actually eat them.

Update. Progress on the weird little creature front? Or passing fascination that burnt out?

What's the wife think?

Actually, I still really, really want one. She thinks it's weird but not something I'll have to worry about for a while (they live outside so I need a house first).

I wish I could have one now, though. I've already chosen a name: Speak. That's what The Tick named his capybara (note: my avatar is a picture of The Tick's capybara). He thought it was a dog at first and he was groggy when he first saw it so he hallucinated that it was talking to him and named it Speak and kept it as a pet.

When you say it's a "giant" rodent, how "giant" are we talking? The size of a small dog?

It can't survive in my apartment. It needs to be outside by a small body of water (little pool) and I live in Chicago so it's gonna need a heater out there too. But they can live in snow and enjoy playing in it.

I checked the date of your original post just to make sure it didn't read April 1st. Then I looked it up on Wikipedia and found out that it actually exists. I gotta say, that thing scares me. sad

The wife and I went to the zoo yesterday in Little Rock. They had one (at least) of these guys, but it was too far off and under a thing (it was quite hot / humid), so I couldn't get a good look or picture.
