Hehe, my first post on the original BatSquad was, if memory serves me, a review of In Darkest Knight where I gave the comic a 2 out of 10.
It sucks. Doesn't waste your money, your rods and cones nor your lifetime.

Haven't read it. But I hear good things. It'll find it's way into my collection once I actually find it.

If you think it's overrated, then you do. I, for one (among many), like it a lot. I think it's one of Waid's best work, although I cannot say to have read everything.

At first I had trouble getting into it because I was new to the DCU and did not know the characters (I didn't even know Green Arrow *gasp*) but now I can understand it a lot better.
I think it's great because this is one entire story (I don't like The Kingdom mini that was released some years ago) and it fits. To me, it just fits. The characters (especially Norman and The Spectre), the roles they play, the way the story progressed (although I think the begin with Magog is a bit stretched), the ending and the art.

I don't know. I do not have to give quantitative arguments for something that I qualitatively enjoy, right?
I just like it a lot. Fin.

I probably had a better handle on this last year. I've just always been underhwelmed by it -- without the Ross art is it really that great? It seems very obvious as a text, inspirational in a contrived manner. Very Superman, but not in very interesting ways.

I might look through it again to get a more in-depth argument, and possibly give it another chance.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Most probably do or will. I don't feel superior in disliking it; truthfully I'm more disappointed. A tortured soul am I. tongue

I do admit that I am a big fan of Ross' work, but is it not the sequential art that makes comics different from 'normal books'? (That said, I do attach more value to a good story than good art, but I do not want to undervalue the artwork.)
And the story is to my liking as well. I would have to read it again as well because it's not so fresh in my mind, but I've been rereading a lot as of late anyway (holiday ends today) so maybe I'll add Kingdom come to the list.

As an art form the comic has a great deal in common with film, so I agree with you about the importance of visuals. Beauty adds to the story even if that's all it is (as much as that can be written off), and lame visuals can flatten a wonderful script.

What I wonder about Kingdom Come is how much the visuals rescue the story and give it clout it otherwise would not have. On one hand this is a great save if true, yet on the other, beyond beauty, just what do these visuals bring to an otherwise paint by numbers narrative? They make it seem more important, but do they actually deliver import and depth?

Besides easter eggs that abound, I don't see much depth or wit in the visual side any more than I do the script side.

defenitely kingdom come!! amazing story, 2nd best comic of all time, next to the watchmen.

and i actually hated gotham by gaslight. not only was it a crappy story in general, but als having a fair amount of knowledge when it comes to jack the ripper, they missed out on SO many oppertunities! mignolas art was awesome though, but that goes without saying.

I'll go with Gotham By Gaslight because I think Mike Mignola was born to do weird Batman stories. The guy's a genius, to me.

For some reason, I never consider DKR an Elseworlds. I always considered it the continuation of the DC Batman if the Crisis hadn't occured (making it an Elseworlds, I guess). It's tough for me to still classify it as Elseworlds because certain authors reuse DKR stuff in current continuity (a kind of wink to Frank, from Jeph Loeb) as if what happened there affects what is happening now here.

My Favorite is RED Son, then Detective #27, I'm sorry to say it but The Nail i didnt really like that much. I thought they tried to hard. It just fell short of my expectations. But I haven't read for a second time yet so i might still like it in the future. Like for example, i didnt like Kingdom Come and DKR for some reason but after 2nd read I love them
