I have a question which I posted on the CBR forums, but I'm not really getting a satisfying answer, so here goes:

For some early trade paperback editions of Batman (and Watchmen) there are trades that bear the Warner Books logo, although there are printings from around the same time that have the familiar DC Comics logo (the old bullet).

Both editions can state ''First Printing'' in the first pages of the book; but which one is truly the first?

I don't think Warner Books is currently printing any DC books, so somewhere down the line they stopped doing it, but I don't know when or why.

Can someone enlighten me on this subject? I was told that the Warner Books editions are/were ''probably'' international editions, like Titan Books is a publisher for the UK market, but I'm not sure that is the case...

Each country tends to get their own First Printing if they get localised printings. So each licensed printing like Titan books will have a First Printing too. Since DC publish their books in the USA (and most countries just import from there) they are technically first. But when Titan Books print their own a couple of months later that we get in the UK, it is still their First Printing for their market. Most of mine are imported US DC books, but I have the odd Titan here and there - such as the much despised City Of Crime, I waited to get that one...

So technically the DC Comics releases come out first, but other editions are still rightfully First Printings for Non-USA markets licensed by DC.

As for Warner Books, my Tales Of The Demon is definitely by them, I'll see if it lists a publication date and get back to you. I would say you are right, they are just another official publication under a different imprint. I'm pretty sure that is one of the very first TPBs, perhaps Warner published themselves before DC got set up to handle the (at the time) new format of publishing comics.

I remember my theory at the time I got the book (and this was just a theory) is that Warner putting their name on it was a way of trying to get the book into book shops and tap into a wider market who perhaps normally wouldn't consider a comic before, perhaps it was part of the Batman '89 marketing craze. You'd have to ask someone else on that one though.

EDIT: Tales Of The Demon says Compilation 1991, First Warner Printing 1992, so for whatever reason in whatever market it came after DC printing but was a First under different publishing office.
