« Thread started on: Jun 5th, 2015, 8:35pm »

Somebody asked me this question:

I have a question that no one seems to be able to help me out with. In many action figure renditions The Joker includes a jester-topped cane or one with his likeness.

I know that he uses a cane throughout the first half of "The Killing Joke" but haven't seen it anywhere else.

Do you know of any comic issues or graphic novels in which the Joker is seen with a cane?

Anyone?

That is an interesting question. I'd imagine there must be a few iconic Pre-Crisis appearances, because when I was little, all the toys came with canes, even the Batman '89 Movie figure.

Unfortunately I don't think I have a reprint of Batman #1 to hand so I can't say if it started there. I swear I've got one somewhere, but can't locate it.

I have done a very brief skim of some Post Crisis appearances and these are my limited findings so far:

[Doing this on a tablet and it won't let me paste in my notes, sorry, will have to double post below]

Briefest appearance of a generic brown cane in Robin II limited series.

Detective #673 Knightquest: The Crusade.

During Paul Dini's Detective run Post-OYL when posing as a magician.

That's all I've got so far. During the week I'll try a fuller search and include wider stuff outside of Post Crisis Continuity.

I picked this up at a costume shop during an after-Halloween sale:

http://www.amazon.com/Comics-Rogues-Gallery-Jokers-Multi/dp/B007FPPU7Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433688456&sr=8-1&keywords=joker+cane

Can't think of any *specific* instances in the comics where he had one, though.

Just checked Batman #1; no cane.

Is it safe to say that the 1989 Batman movie is responsible for the depiction of Joker with a cane, since there aren't any depictions (as far as I know) of him with a cane prior to the Burton movie?

Off topic: how do I insert an image into my post when the image file is on my computer?
