I'm still very dubious as to how much of this is hype.
Morrison was only saying a few months ago that he had two years planned for Batman Incorporated; the first year being all build up and the second year being the massive payoff of everything he's been building since 2006. Are DC really throwing all that out the window?! Are they really going to restart Batman Inc at #1 again when we've barely even got to #6 on the current run?! Will they really end his run early, when only a few months ago he was saying this? I'm thinking (and really hoping) less will be affected than what they're hyping.
If this is a 'big continuity reboot' like One Year Later, it's not that big a deal because that affected very little. If they're starting again Mid 80s style then I will be less than happy. Batman comics are the best they've been in years with some surprisingly fresh stories going on. Morrion's Batman = best mainstream stuff ever. Scott Snyder's dark Dick Grayson in Detective = awesome. Batgirl = awesome (aside from Nguyen art). Will DC really throw all this out to resell us all those origin stories for the 50,000th time and make everyone young again? I hope not.
Personally I've been thinking on this concept for a while and I'd be happy to not see a reboot until Bruce Wayne has long since retired - I'm liking the characters aging thing, in many ways that's one of the most original things DC have been doing. Ironic isn't it.
It'll be sad to waste the landmark achievements of some of the runs, I for one have been waiting for Detective to hit that coveted #1000 in years to come!
I think there is way too much emphasis on #1s these days. Take Birds Of Prey, there was absolutely no reason to start at #1 again the last time they did it, they could have very easily continued where they left off. Personally I think the higher the number, the more respectable the acheivement. Batgirl I can understand the starting afresh because it was a new girl. But things like Birds should have just picked up where they left off with the numbers, nothing else really changed. And now they're doing a THIRD Birds #1?! For fuck's sake.
Quite honestly, if this is a total reboot, then it seriously tempts me as my "jumping off point." I've dedicated so much time and money (and physical space) to this Continuity, I don't really want to start another one! All monthies will defintely get dropped and I will wait for TPB's to see if I want to jump back on again. In some ways it would be nice to have a fairly cohesive start-finish Continuity shelf. But it wont be a finish, none of the characters developed over the last 25 years will have any sort of resolution.
But that's all conjecture right? This is all just shameless marketing hype... Within a year this will be as forgotten as One Year Later was... Surely? Morrison said he had a two year plan, must trust in Morrison...

Both of these are phrases I used. I, too, wonder how much of this is real. I still think Flashpoint is going to end up a huge elseworlds thing that'll be swept under the rug sooner than later. I truly doubt they're just throwing Action #900 and Detective right behind it in numbering out the window. Even with relaunches, they always seem to go back to the original numbers (see recent Wonder Woman titles, etc.). Like you, I'm thinking One Year Later. This'll last an arc or two and everyone will forget it. Fingers crossed. Though I'm not a Morrison fan by any stretch (nor do I particularly like him), I am digging what's going on in the bat and green books. I've jumped off the super-titles and haven't been keeping up with the J*A lately, either.

I guess this step falls in line with a world where titles are relaunched separately. I do not care about this one bit.
Maybe we just need to relaunch titles every month? That way the volume will just become the new numbering.
Jan 2013 Batman #1 vol 13. Feb 2013 Batman #1 vol 14!

Shhh, you'll give them more ideas ---
The more I think about it, the more I think it's gotta be an over-hyped minor shake-up. They want to court new readers offput by the huge wealth of backstory knowledge required, that is fair enough. But to do so at the expense of all the loyal legions who enjoy this stuff all the more because of the wealth of backstory would be stupid of them.
Am I worried? Yes, I am. But I'm hoping it is more of a case of making it more accessible to new readers, perhaps with less emphasis on the past, rather than a total chucking out of everything that keeps the long term readers coming back time and time again. You know, exactly the way Batgirl is written! It has enough backstory references to keep someone like me really happy, but it's also written in a way to be really accessible to someone coming in fresh! That is the best solution.
To be honest, that's much like with Morrison is doing now. Batman Inc is largely a fresh start for his run, but obviously it will tie into stuff he's been builidng since 2006. IE - it's easy enough to come in fresh without knowing about all the Dr Hurt stuff, but knowledge of those early issues will make reading Inc even more satisfying for the long term reader.
Personally I think the biggest hindrance is not backstory, it is the excessive number of monthly books! I mean, where would someone start?! Batman / Batman Inc / Batman & Robin / Detective / The Dark Knight, and that's just Batman alone, not even counting Red Robin / Batgirl / Sirens / Birds / mini series like Gates Of Gotham. And all those books interconnect with each other. Even if they reboot everything, give it a year and new people will again be too overwhelmed to break in. In fact, DC are launching 52 new #1s! That is ridiculous! How is ANYONE new going to know where to start with 52 bloody books a month?!
I know DC would never do it, but I think the best solution is to seriously trim down the number of publications. Put Morrison on Batman for Bruce, keep Detective for Dick, and keep Batgirl, Red Robin, and Birds. It would be so much easier to keep track, because to be honest the last couple of years have been pretty hard for me to follow just due to how much stuff is getting published every month and it is stupid how much these characters are supposed to be cramming into their days with the way they get spread across multiple titles! Or just cancel EVERYTHING and publish just one book a month based all around Gordon, that would work for me too
Less quanitity/higher quality. That is what DC needs, not a reset.

This is such bullshit. It better be a publicity stunt. If they really do this and it doesn't go back to normal, I'm done.

I don't like IGN, but they seem to have got an exclusive on the Batman plans: http://uk.comics.ign.com/articles/117/1172822p1.html
It's both good and bad news. The best news is that it's definitely looking like a OYL style shake%2Dup more than anything else.
Bad News: %2D No more Dick as Batman, no word yet on what the plans are for him.
%2D Tony Daniel is sticking around on writing duties.
%2D Bruce is back in the old crappy costume, gone is the wonderful yellow oval logo.
%2D All numbers being reset = lame.
Good News: %2D Damian is still Robin, meaning it's not a major reboot/reset/whatever.
%2D Scott Snyder is sticking around.
%2D Grant Morrison is sticking around so his epic shall continue, and hopefully this shake%2Dup isn't interfering in his master plan.
Ridiculous News: %2D Batman: The Dark Knight Vol 2 #1. Point and laugh people, point and laugh. I'd say this is about as likely as All Star Batman & Robin #11 showing up. %2D%2D%2D
Also, I don't know where this came from, but I don't know what to make of it:

As long as it aint Jason in his own book I can deal with it! If the escrima sticks mean that it is new Dick as Nightwing, I don't like the costume as much as the old one, and I liked having him as Batman, but I can deal with it fine because Dick Grayson's awesomeness transcends the costume he wears! Red eye lenses are weird though...

Batgirl confirmed as being Barbara Gordon; Nightwing confirmed as being Dick Grayson. It also says it's the same Dick that's been Batman, so no new universe...

I'd say I'm half relieved, half disappointed. To me it seems like DC are playing it way too safe. For the most part I really liked the Batman Reborn shake-up a couple of years back because they were trying some pretty creative things.
It seems that they are pandering to the outsiders who know the characters through the movies and animated series etc by restoring some of the characters to old identities. I don't like that Barbara is back as Batgirl, I liked the identity they have spent two decades forging for her. I liked Steph as Batgirl, are they going to bump her back to being Spoiler again in that lame-ass costume? Dick being Nightwing also seems like a step back because he's been fighting at the forefront of the big leagues for the last couple of years, and it seems like they're reverting him back to sideline character. All in all it feels like we're heading back to where we were five years ago, which was great at the time, but I liked that we've been moving forward lately. Now we're just moving backwards again and I don't like that. We all knew Dick wasn't going to be Batman forever (no pun intended), and in many ways lasted longer than expected. But I still wish they gave him even longer, the dark turn in Detective has been great, as has his partnership with Damian that I hope they revisit.
Let's just hope that they make the most of this and give us some good stories that justify the changes.

I updated the initial post with the known titles. We're up to 34 of the 52. I'll do my best to keep that updated.

Updated - we're now at 39-40 known titles. The Teen Titans book looks like crap - Tim's new costume? Please no feathers. Please?

How did Superboy get that tattoo? It must be one of those fake tattoos you rub on with some water because no needle would penetrate his skin.
"Let's go for the cool yet illogical design for Superboy and Robin." "Doesn't that make it even lamer?" "Nah, braw."
