xx So who is this new target audience?
« Thread started on: Oct 13th, 2011, 2:41pm »

First of all , Hello ! I have been nudged this way by the lovely Nick and have found the forums very interesting so thought I'd make myself known.

Long time reader of Batman but like most was rather bewilder by this 'reboot' . Spoilers (sort of ) !

So far I have read Suicide Squad 1 and 2 and Catwoman 1. Here are my thoughts :

Suicide Squad 1 - Weak plot, interesting set up for number 2. I am not loving the new look Harley and PLEASE get rid of her pointless ruff necked mini cape. It infuriates me. Thats about it. Pretty uninspiring.

SS 2 - Better, but I'm not feeling much for the characters. The wording leaves a lot to be desired as they seem to reitereate every scene by having the characters say it to you as well. Poor story telling but I like the plot.

Catwoman - Um. ok? So you are what? f*** buddies? and you are terrible at getting dressed. You also spend no time stealing what you set out to steal in this supposed plot. You'd rather be a stripper? right......

So I guess the new audience for Catwoman are teenage girls who want to bed a super hero. Or they are sexually frustrated Men ( or lesbians of course. We don't judge ). I have seen things like this on some rather questionable websites.

I feel this has portrayed Catwoman as rather shallow to new readers. Had I been writing this I think Selina 'needing' batman would have been more powerful if a Kiss had almost happened but then he 'pulled a batman' on her and dissapeared into the night. Much more fitting for character developement and the possibility of building on these emotions. What a pity they didnt put that scene to better use.

I have come to the conclusion that the target audience is DIDIO! Just take a look at the concept on the left for a Catwoman cover...

Hmmmm. Now I do like Guillem March's art, I like his style. But this is the sort of thing that works as fan art, not so much in (or in this case on the bloody cover of) an official DC book.

Welcome to the Squad, Geekchic. Enjoy your stay.

The target audience escapes everyone, I think. It escapes me, it escapes you, it escapes this forum, it escapes DC and I think it will also escape the target audience itself.

Some people come in to get new comic books. Sure. DC's relaunch 'sells' a lot of comics. Sure. (Let's not forget that the 'sales' are only the issues the comic book retailers have bought. It's not the amount of books sold to costumers.) Bad or good, the entire internet is buzzing with it and Marvel is pretty much on second place. Sure.

Like snipe, I am done with monthly issues. Several people feel the same and others have jumped on board. We will have to wait for several months to see what actually sticks and how well DC is doing. If they're doing better, I am sure they don't mind me quitting because they gained more new customers with it.

But who will those customers be? A lot of the hardcore continuity loyalists will have dropped out. People that enjoy the story regardless of the logicality of the reboot (in other words, people that aren't so uptight about it) can probably still enjoy certain series.

The new readers... I guess they are just people who are curious. DC has the right idea: superheroes aren't just kiddy cartoons anymore. They are visible and people like them: people watch superhero movies all the time. They want those new readers now. Screw the transition into the new DCU -- get it done and we'll do the patch-up job afterwards. New readers will not notice, anyway.

In the end, I think there is no 'new' target audience. DC wants more visibility but the writers will just write the same stories. They can't all suddenly be forced to start writing more sex into it, more MTV references, more teenage dialogue or something else.

In that sense, I feel I, personally, have lost out. It won't be long before the stories will be just as good as before the reboot, not edgier or worse than before the reboot. Therefore, this reboot will not, per se, lead to a bad thing. I have still given up on it.

But, in the same sense, I feel I have won as well. The reboot will accomplish nothing and I will have read all those stories before. It's good that I now quit. I have a wonderful Batman/DC collection of comics. More than enough for, literally, a lifetime of floppies. Some stories amazing, others forgettable. It does not matter. They're my collection with the characters I like or have grown to like. What more could or should I want?
