xx Crisis To Crisis (AKA How important is Zero Hour?)
« Thread started on: Jun 19th, 2017, 08:26am »

I decided I felt like reading Convergence (the actual series, not just Batman family tie-ins) and Multiversity (shock horror, a Grant Morrison I haven't read)! I thought, why not do a run of reading just the Crises. One I never read was Zero Hour. So I have two questions:

1) If I was just going to read the Crises themselves, can I safely skip Zero Hour? I know the practical reason for it existing as a plot device, but is the actual plot itself really that important in the grander scheme or just the results of it?

2) Based on the list below, am I missing any books you consider vitally important that you recommend, and why? I've always been almost exclusively Batman family focussed and these are the ones I thought were Batman essential. But I'm happy to consider others if they have absolutely vital plot elements not included in these books.

---

What I already had before:

  • If it was published in a Batman Family book, I have it, including all Zero Hour tie-ins).

  • Crisis On Infinite Earths TPB
  • Identity Crisis TPB
  • JLA Crisis Of Conscience TPB
  • OMAC Project TPB
  • Infinite Crisis TPB
  • 52 TPBs (base series only)
  • Final Crisis TPB
  • Flashpoint TPB

Just added:
  • Convergence TPB (already had tie-ins)
  • Multiversity TPB

Zero Hour. If you have it, go for it. I'm not sure there's a trade in print that you could easily track down otherwise unless you want to go the ebay way.
I don't see it as essential in the "crisis" scheme, though I do see it as essential when reading titles from '94. It reset time on several events and mashed some stuff into the timeline. IIRC, it helped put the JSA into the post-Crisis timeline.
There's also a series of trades called Crisis on Multiple Earths. These cover the early JLA summer events where Earth-1 interacted with others. You'll get good background on characters and events from the original Crisis, but definitely not essential. They're only named "Crisis..." to tie in with COIE.
Identity Crisis is the mind-wipe story. It's more self-contained and not far reaching. Not sure I'd consider it a crisis.

Cheers. There is a fairly recent Zero Hour TPB which is probably of the usual modern DC terrible print quality. I didn't realise the JSA were brought back in with Zero Hour. As they are important, that is a factor in the favour of actually reading it. From what I have read about it (rather than actually reading it) it was like you say, a soft reboot to tidy up the timeline because they didn't think it out properly with CoIE. But at least early Post-Crisis was still better than New 52! As far as Batman goes, I think it was in the tie-ins which I have read a long time ago where they made the Wayne murders by an anonymous mugger never caught. I never liked that, I was glad the Joe Chill origin was brought back again.

It's been a while since I last looked at Identity Crisis, but I think I had it because (if I'm recalling correctly) it deals with the Catwoman mindwipe that factored heavily into her solo series and the death of Jack Drake. I think I got JLA Crisis Of Conscience because it picked up the Catwoman plot again, but I can't remember at the moment why it jumped out at me.

Just to add another to your list, Cosmic Odyssey brings the New Gods back. There's also a 2 issue "History of the DC Universe" that Wolfman / Perez did that followed up to COIE.

Zero Hour also dealt with Parallax and the Monarch / Armageddon 2001 series.
