night owl, volume 3
Post by snipe on Jun 7th, 2005, 10:42pm

So, um, how's it going? I spent most of the night getting this thing done and rearranging furniture in the bedroom. The grand-in-laws got us some drawer things. Now the bedroom is cluttered.

the best thing about this? The old SHH  has returned! angry

I'm sorry we've lost a couple of good topics, but then again: there's no time like the present.

I've been so busy that I haven't had time for my hobbies. I can't wait for school to finish. I'm taking a long ass vacation and cleaning out the comic book guy in my town! Then I'm getting super pissed and then (read my sig.) That's my night owl banter for today.

Hey dudelove, thanks for the words. It's good to see you back in DL action, as well!

Too bad about Astro City, but school is important, I agree. Astro City will keep.

Did you know that I need to give a presentation about whatever I want tomorrow? I study Psychology and eventhough most people are doing their presentation about some psychological issue, my topic will be Alan Moore and his masterpiece Watchmen along with short summaries and descriptions of other stories like From Hell. Promethea and League of Extraordinairy Gentlemen.
I also talked to a girl and she's going to present something about our innocent Michael Jackson cheesy.

I agree with Marv,

In From Hell, Gull (possibly Moore) is really the only person you can use. However with AA you have a whole plate full of loons.
Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by TheMidnighter on Jun 16th, 2005, 04:45am

Maybe so, but it didn't need to have anything to do with psychology: I just needed to present something and use certain skills like summarizing and so on.
I had 10 minutes, but I was too enthousiastic and made it 20 because I wanted to tell so much.

I did make one girl very interested in Promethea so I'm going to lend it to her tomorrow. I only have TPB's #1 and #2 but maybe I'll buy the remaining 3, for myself and so that she can read the entire story during the holidays.

So for tomorrow, I'm going to pick a subject that is so lame, so dull, so standard, so normal, so non-special that my presentation will be those very things as well, and then it'll be good.

I did get points for enthousiasm. And I was wearing my Spider-Man T-shirt and one guy noticed that as well grin.

I organized a party last Thursday and it was a blast. It was the Endparty of our studenttheatergroup and it was very nice. It was the Evil Badguyparty and I was Dracula and I had 2 brides - it was nice.
I'm going to be in the board next season, so we had a transfer of the old board and the new board, which was nice as well. We sang a song and had champagne (I don't drink so I filled my glass with water cheesy).

Oh, and my girlfriend already went home with me to my parents (we're only together since June 15th) and I'm free for the summer. That means work and beach and my girl!

And The BatSquad, of course.

Just as things were getting better at work, they add more tasks. Now we have to ask every single customer we see if they need help. Sure it's a nice thing to do, but then we never get anything done. And as if that isn't enough, they had more call buttons for customers to contact us (and if you think they allow overtime, guess again). I think this is scaring co-workers because lately people have been leaving. They want me to apply for some of the other job positions (including management) but things are hard enough as it is.

Fortunately, I have vacation coming up. I'm thinking of going to Tennessee to visit some relatives and enjoy the fresh air.

Nintendo.com has these great offer: Register three products and get three issues of Nintendo Power free. I received my first free issue and it came with a DVD with footage of the next Zelda game. Freakin awesome !!! I should get back into playing video games. I hear a Mega Man X Collection is coming out later this year.

I applied for a job to promote my study in the Psychology Promoteam and I got the job. It pays 8 euro per hour and you can add traveltime to that and you usually get a decent meal and drinks. Hell yeah!

I'm a member of the board of the studenttheatergroup now and I'm about to make a completely new website. I've done that only once 4 years ago so I'm excited about that. Plus, I host the forum of the theatergroup -- I almost feel like Lord Dick smiley.

With the theatergroup, we performed yesterday one of our plays another time. I had to do the lights manually instead of having it all preset: that was fun.

Not too much to tell beside this. I just looked at the time and I have to be there in half an hour so I'll check the rest of the boards and bid you adieu!

I ordered some Dragonball Z soundtrack CD's from the man who did the English soundtrack to Dragonball Z, Bruce Faulconer. They arrived today and he was nice enough to sign each CD personally. His music is really diverse: Some sound bad (early stuff)while other themes sound badass.

A girl who left work last year returned. She's cute, but taken huh. Who knows? If I get a girlfriend by next year, I can take her to the next Comic Con (It would be my first trip to California. It would make it even more memorable to be in a relationship at the time.)

BREAKING NEWS
NBC News and news services
Updated: 9:53 a.m. ET July 7, 2005

NOTE: This is a developing story and details will be added as they become available.

LONDON - At least 40 people were killed in the explosions that ripped through three London subway trains and a bus on Thursday, according to a U.S. law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because British officials have yet to make public the death toll.

The near simultaneous explosions caused more than 300 injuries in what Prime Minister Tony Blair said was a "barbaric" terrorist attack.

U.S. authorities learned of the fatalities from their British counterparts, according to the official.

The explosions came a day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and as the Group of Eight summit was getting under way in Scotland.

The blasts went off between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. local time. Implementing an emergency plan, authorities immediately shut down the subway and bus lines that log 8.4 million passenger trips every weekday. It brought the city’s transportation system to a standstill and left many central London streets deserted.

London police chief Sir Ian Blair said authorities had not received any warning. "We have been at a very high state of alert. Of course if there had been any kind of specific warnings we would have dealt with it," he said.

Four explosions confirmed
By early afternoon, London hospitals reported one death and said they had treated more than 300 people. The Royal London Hospital in the city's East End, which received the bulk of the injured, said 123 of about 180 casualties had been treated and released.

A senior police official said about 150 people were seriously injured. Police sources have said at least two people died.

British Home Secretary Charles Clarke said there were three explosions on the subway system and one on a bus. Earlier reports indicated six explosions.

“We do not know who or what organizations are responsible for these terrible criminal acts,” Clarke said.

Prime Minister Blair later left the G-8 summit for the day to return to London, while the other leaders continued the meeting.

"They will never succeed in destroying what we hold dear in this country and in other civilized nations throughout the world," Blair said before leaving and flanked by fellow G-8 leaders, including President Bush. "We shall prevail and they shall not."

Bush later warned Americans to be "extra vigilant" as they head to work.

Geeze...I seriously don't know what to say about that.
London
Post by TheMidnighter on Jul 8th, 2005, 12:13pm

Seems to me that terrorism groups have finally taken up on the notion that no one can prevent terrorist attacks. It cannot be done.
For example: Here, in The Netherlands, the government's first act was to put extra police force near British buildings and monuments. What!? As if that helps. First of all, if I was a terrorist, I wouldn't strike a place with the same 'theme' in a row, but second, what if they did? Then we'd just have more police officers explode inside a building, or seeing a plane hitting a monument. It's not going to help. You cannot prevent 100%. You can try to put it to a stop and thus decrease strikes by striking the root of the problem: the organisations themselves.

With that said, I do grieve that this is happening in the world today.

Today, I finished an assignment I had to do. I had to hand it over today as well, but I'll just do that secretly tomorrow morning.
I'm a bastard, I know.

Tonight, I'm going to watch some BTAS episodes.

I mean, I've tried everything that I could to be with someone, and it just falls flat on my face. Every. Single. Time.

Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by TheMidnighter on Jul 11th, 2005, 01:56am

All I've done is wait 20 years.

No, not really. You just need to ask yourself what you want. I know I'm really old-fashioned: I didn't go the 'playah' way and I couldn't enjoy kissing or doing whatever to a girl I wasn't in love with. I'm not saying this is the way to live your life -- if people enjoy one-nighters, knock yourself out.
What I wanted was a girl whom to love. I found her. I liked more girls before her but, after 20 years of holding on to my principles and a couple of relationships that were doomed since the beginning, I'm now together with a girl I love, entirely.

I know it sounds crappy, but just be yourself. There's bound to be a girl that is in for a guy like you.
Also, take content in the fact that at a certain age, girls don't care much for the cool guys anymore (only the slutty girls do and I wouldn't want one of those) but they start liking the friendly, gentle ones. At that point, they don't care that you collect comics or don't wear certain types of clothing.

I'll stop now before I start to rant on and on. But if you, or anyone else, ever needs an ear, a shoulder, a helping hand: I'm here and my PM box is not full cheesy!

beach beach beach
Post by TheMidnighter on Jul 14th, 2005, 6:52pm

These last two days I went to the beach 3 times.
Yesterday and today I went with a good friend of mine from Maastricht. She was bored there because everybody has gone to their parents, including me. My parents live near the ocean so she asked if she could come over and spent 2 days on the beach: of course she could!
She went back to Maastricht this evening and this evening I went to the beach with one of my best friends. The sun was almost down when we went, but the wheather is still very nice at the moment. Afterwards we went to his parential home to drink some hot chocolate milk.
Tomorrow promises to be a fine day for the beach as well. I have to remember to get my comics too because I forgot to get them today...

It's 2 AM so I guess I'll hit the sack because I need to do my paperround at 04:30.

Man, I haven't been to the beach in years (when I hear "beach", I think " angry" ). I should go after I get back from my trip .

My yearly evaluation at work was this week and I received a raise. cheesy It wasn't much, but it still beats my first job at fast food (both in pay and work environment).

When you've finished the flight and you get to Nashville. Take off your shoes and socks, make fists with your feet and walk around on the carpet.

It worked for the guy from the start of Die Hard.

So anyhoo...I'm convinced the lady that runs the ice cream parlor that I work at is Lucifer Morningstar incarnate. Why? Oh I'll list the reasons why:

1. She's mean to people who are mentally handicapped. (And I'm not joking, she told one person that works there that they were just stupid and to clock out early)

2. She uses scrap metal as a tampon. That's the only explanation for why she threw out a waiter who decided to have some ice cream on his day off. I'm not kidding, she threw him out. He wasn't even supposed to be there that night, it wasn't crowded and he wanted some ice cream.

3. She went apeshit on one kid (who's only been here a few months, great kid) for not wearing an apron but doesn't say one fucking word to her favorite who's been here only a year when he stopped wearing his one month ago.

4. She's an ex nun. And she's morbidly obese.

5. She kills puppies and then drinks their blood. Okay, I was kidding then. But she really is mean to mentally handicapped people.

OK, I have nothing better to do at this moment, so I'll just think off some things I have done as of late.

It was summerholiday, so I went to my parential home in Middelburg near the ocean (20 minutes on bike) while my girlfriend was in Germany (she's from there). I missed her a lot, but luckily friends dropped by.
Then she came to Middelburg as well and we had a great time: beaching, going out, movies, etc.

Then we went to her hometown in Germany. There I got to know her parents (I already saw her mother once, but that was very short). Her parents are nice, to me at least; against each other and against my girlfriend they can be a little less nice and I don't like that. But to comment on that on my first time there would be a bit overdone. I did give my girlfriend some advise what I would do to make it stop or at least less.
In Germany we went to a sail, the cinema, went to some cities, swam in the lake (naked cheesy), visited her grandmother and we also went 2 days to the World Youth Days in Cologne (I thought it wasn't really great and the bastards are true leeches... Fuckers).

Then we went back before the Pope came and we went to Maastricht because I was going to be mentor for a group of firstyear students. I was going to show them Maastricht. That took place from 23 until 26 August. It was awesome. I was mentor together with someone else from the theatergroup and we had such a great group! There were at first 10, but we received 2 more and one left at the very beginning and after that we got 2 more to join us. We had an international, English speaking group so most of them were from Germany. There were some Dutch people in the group as well that wanted to be a part of the international group because they're going to do an English spoken study (International Business, European Studies). We also had 3 fresh Psychology students so I'll see them on the faculty.
These 4 days were packed with activities: during daytime to get to know Maastricht and its streets, culture, fraternities and more; at night it was usually just partying -- it was intense. The best example I can give is that I got home Wednesday morning at 06:00 and had to get up at 08:00. Luckily I can take this sort of stuff very good (I'm not being macho or lying, I just don't need a lot of sleep).

Me and my fellow mentor were very lucky to have had these kids and I guess the kids can also consider them to be lucky to have had us as mentors instead of people that do not care.

One hell of a week. Both regarding physical draining and fun.
Now just one more week off and then to start already my second year as a Psychology student.

cool stuff.....
ladies and gentle people; this week has marked itself in time . . . or something the likes wink
anyways, first off, i've already mentioned, my roommate will move out soon which leaves me sorta troubled, on one hand i can't wait to live alone again, on the other hand he moves 500km away (again) and we won't be seeing each other that often. plus i'll miss the money.
which leaves me to thinking a lot about my current way of life. but let's not go down that road too far...
because of that current thinking i decided to call my friend anja, you remember, the second part of ARThritis, to talk about our really ugly homepage.
we decided to do an all new page. i'm a looser when it comes to web design so i called a friend in the netherlands, he agreed to set up the page.
so we started on pondering about a desing, both beeing designers and pretty close in things we like and dislike helped a lot. when we met for our last brainstorm, it turned out that we had similar or the same ideas so we immediately began to scribble down sketches. we decided on some sort of simplicity mixed with art deco elements all in black/white. i love this line of work, i design the stuff on the computer and don't have to care about how to get it online. nor how to put it on a page. *grin*
i spent a few hours on drawing the menue on the computer, for my scanner is broke i couldn't even scan the sketch, a CAD pen would be cool but by now i'm pretty handy with my mouse smiley the next things will be the stupid work, collecting background images, and of course get photos from our artwork to put up. but i hd so much fun doing the menue gosh!i hope to have the page up end of next week, right now all depends on when my dutch friend has time to do it smiley

- two homeless people in two different restaurants (fast food) in two different counties begging for food; I've never seen this happen before.

- a car accident with my 1990 Grand AM that eats my money when it comes to repairs.

- a new car. I'm making payments on a 2001 Mazda 626 with awesome A/C and CD player. cheesy

- Hurricane Katrina. I lost power on Thursday and regained it an hour ago.

-52 emails in my inbox

Isn't that always the problem with standards?
This is something I really have thought about a lot, especially in light of the fairer sexe.

I mean, I have 'high standards about girls' which results in me having been single for the biggest part of my life. Other guys do not have such high standards and flirt, kiss and have casual sex whenever they feel like it, because they can more easily find a girl that is okay for them. I, for one, would not do such a thing.

Is my way best? Is there a better way? I mean, sure, I take more care in selecting someone that fits with me. That's the only way for me to enjoy a girl. But people with 'lower standards' are not really that: low. They just have more opporunity to enjoy life, because they do not bitch about it as much as I do. If you look at it, they will be happier than I am - quantitively at least - because their 'standards' will be met more often than mine.
As of quality, I can say nothing.

Ah well, I just felt like ranting about stuff I've thought about at one point or another.

Well, this sucks...

Okay, here's the backstory: One of my dad's friends lives just across the street from us. His name is TJ and he asked me a few days ago to help him tutor his son. He offered a bunch of money (five bucks a day which over a month would equal somewhere over $100). Of course, I said yes.

Today, after school, I called TJ on my cell phone that I was on my way to his son's high school, so that we can meet the teacher and get things situated. His school is just across the street from mine, so I just jog quickly over to the school and walk to the office.

I get inside, I talk for a bit with the girls there (this used to be the school I went to, and the girls there remembered me, so they wanted to play "catch-up," you know how it is). Anyway, I check my holder for my cell (a little clip thing I put on my belt)...and my phone's gone. I check my hands, my pockets, around the office. It's gone.

I run out, re-tracing my steps, walking back over to the other side of the street...and then I saw it, flipped open, on the street. I run towards it, hoping that it wasn't damaged. It was.

The led screen inside's cracked, looking more like a psychadelic coloring than the background I had before. The display when flipped down doesn't work at all. It's chipped all across the plastic. It makes an interesting SNAP when I fold it up or down.

Here's the kicker...it still worked. I called my mom on it and told her what happened. She picked me up from the joint and called the phone company.

Now, both mine and my mom's cell are Verizon phones. My mom calls them up and finds out that it costs fifty bucks, and I can't upgrade for something else until October '06.

So, yeah, this sucks.
sucks... a lot
Post by TheMidnighter on Sep 10th, 2005, 11:52am

Yeah man, sucks. I keep my cellphone in my pocket but I'm 'The Dropper' so it has learned to rol with it whenever I drop it.

You know what else sucks? Pop-ups. I've got them and cannot get rid of them.

You know what else sucks? That my girlfriend is now back in Germany for her mother's birthday (that is today) because she was going to sing there (she studies at the conservatory, classical singing) and her mother went all bitchy... My girl called me last night and told me that she didn't like it there and wants to come home ASAP. Her mother had a bad day at her job or something but decided to take it out on her daughter... Stupid woman. I keep telling my girlfriend that she should tell her parents that that is no productive way to deal with emotions but I guess these adults are finished developing and have now made of their lives - and theirselves! - what they wanted or at least what they cared to make of it.
Suckers. It really pisses me off because my girlfriend doesn't deserve this.

You know what else sucks? That in All Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder (fucking long title), Miller keeps on repeating his sentences. If it's used with one person, I can understand it because that's personal. But not the fact that Vale, Grayson and Wayne do it. Sucks.

You know what also sucked? Yesterdayevening. There was this DnB party and I was really looking forward to it, but the DJ's played all boring songs and it was so tiring. Tonight, I'm going to Belgium with a friend of mine to another friend of us in hope of something better.
It will probably suck because I heard it's techno and the likes so that will probably just be BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM all night. Ah well, we'll have fun.

You know what sucks as well? This song 'Watskeburt'... But it sucks so hard that it's funny. cheesy

Hmm, I cannot find Dreamweaver anymore. That sucks.

This post most likely sucks.

I have to agree that you will get higher standards and you will patry more and have more fun during college. I do too. But don't overdo it because (1) it will not be special anymore and (2) you also have your study to think of.
It's cliché, but that's why it's true.

We had a presentationevening with our studenttheatergroup last Wednesday and it was a blast. So many people attended the evening and most of them applied for a course or play -- awesome.

What else is there to tell? Ehhhhhhhm... I've been listening to this song Ghost in the Shell by Aphex Twin (well, that's what LimeWire says, I don't believe it) and it is great. Also, try Aphex Twin - Heliospan. It's really relaxing.

Today, I'll try to catch up with the rest of the course because I've found out I've read the readers that weren't the most important or most informative ones. Today, my free day, will therefore be filled with studying, studying and more studying.

Did you know that I had a doubledate with my girlfriend, best friend and his girlfriend?
Did you know that I made the macaroni for us (and it was good) and that my best friend and his girlfriend made the desserts?
Did you know we went to watch Princess Mononoke afterwards but were too tired to finish the movie?

Did you know I'm going to go give a presentation in Venlo together with a more experienced promoter of the University of Maastricht coming Monday?
Did you know that coming Wednesday I'm going to go to Utrecht and stand at one of our stands for 1½ days to promote the UM as well?
Did you know I'm really looking forward to both these things?

Did you know I'm in one of my rare bad moods?

[We use the "wist je dat..." ("did you know that...") format with the studenttheatergroup on our own forums. That's why I went and tried it here.]

OK guys....I need your help. Considering that this is a situation that involves the internet, you guys can probably help. My account that I've had for two years at the Hype has been banned. It was not my fault, my cousin decided to be a douche bag and troll on the boards (while I was signed off) on a computer in my house, giving the two accounts the same IP address. Now this made it look like my cousins account was one that I had made specially for trolling, and of course, I wouldn't do that. Now, my account was on probation, so I decided to make an account to PM Dew so that I could just explain the whole situation. Joey goes apeshit, accuses me (yet again) of trolling, bans my Sarge account, and then puts the account that I've used to PM Dew on probation. I'm asking you guys with Hype accounts (Snipe, Marvel, dude love, Clerk etc.) to login one last time and vouch for me so that I can get my Sarge account unbanned. I've never really asked you guys for anything, but I've known most of you for over two years, and I always figured that you'd have my back if it came to a forum related ordeal.

Its all good with the car, only material things, we can get another one, we're alive, so im greatful. We went through a massive line-up change with my band, so our EP has been pushed back to late '05 possible early '06, but we'll see. Hopefully the boards run better here, that crashing business was crazy. However stability is a good thing so I guess we're in good hands then.

Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by Sarge on Oct 13th, 2005, 08:15am

Gahhh....Im still in fucking shock...the Stones were absolutely fucking incredible last night....Mick can shake it like nobody I've ever seen, especially considering his age. Keith (KEEF!) looks like they dug up his corpse and propped it up on stage, though. Except during Tumbling Dice, he was fucking GOD during that song. My favorite performances of the set were:

Start Me Up
Bitch
Midnight Rambler
Wild Horses
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Tumbling Dice
Honky Tonk Women
It's Only Rock n Roll (But I Like It)
The Night time is the Right time (Ray Charles cover)
Paint it, Black
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Brown Sugar

Sympathy for the Devil was their weakest song of the night, unfortunately, and there was some stuff from their new album that I was unfamiliar with, as well as a few more covers, but overall, their set kicked ass.

Also, on a side note, John Maher was the opening act, and he actually rocked it pretty hard. He's a Berkeley trained guitarist so once you get the guy up on stage he's like a Blues monster.

Derek Fridolfs did the sketch. When I'm brave enough to take it to a scanner, I will scan it. For now I'll figure out what to do with it: frame it or not, hang it up then or put it on a shelf, keep it like this but will that not be dangerous? Argh!
Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by TheMidnighter on Oct 18th, 2005, 04:55am

OK guys, I have a question.
I have this chance to get 2 more sketches. One of them will be Elijah Snow from Planetary but which character shall I take for the other?

- Batman from DKR
- The Doctor from The Authority
- Cyclops from Morrison's New X-Men
- Rorschach from Watchmen
- another character, perhaps a cool villain (like The Joker)?

I would've gone for characters from The Invisibles but the artist (Derek Fridolfs again) doesn't know them very well so that makes it difficult for him.
Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by dudelovebaby on Oct 18th, 2005, 08:33am

Re: night owl, volume 3

DKR Batman. Especially if it's a Miller sketch.

Although Rorshach would be badass, too.
sketches
Post by TheMidnighter on Oct 20th, 2005, 2:51pm

I've decided to go with Elijah Snow from Panetary and Morpheus from Sandman. DKR Batman would've been second (third choice) but I really don't think the character would've kept its charm if someone else would've drawn it - I've seen the artist's work and, although I like it, it wouldn't be Miller's. Which could be cool, but I've gone with Morpheus. And Rorschach, although a cool character, is not really exciting to own as a sketch, methinks.

I've been drawing a lot recently, did I mention that already? So far, I've drawn, in the past few days: King Mob, Cyclops, Ragged Robin and Lord Fanny. I'm going to draw Boy, Jack Frost, Mr Six, King Mob (again), Batman and a whole lot of characters more.

Not too much happening here. I got Employee of the Month yet again and I'm finding myself more and more exhausted (even with 8 hours sleep or more, I'm still tired). Plus I've been really thirsty lately (some days, I've drank a half gallon of milk). I'm planning on going to a masseuse to relieve some tension before Black Friday next week.

My local comic book store is having its bi-annual sale this Saturday where they have a tent outside with 50% off TPBs and 3 comics for $1.00, 50% off backissues inside the store, and 10% off everything else (they also sell action figures for cheap too). It was suppose to happen the weekend before Halloween, but since Hurricane Wilma came they changed it to this weekend. And as a bonus, it's now 5 comics for $1.00.

When I order DVD's online it's from two sites: Amazon.com and DeepDiscountDvd.com. This week, Deep Discount DVD has a special sale where you can take an additional 20% off your entire purchase (except for preorders). Their prices are already cheap so check it out. You have to use the coupon code: DVDTALK to subtract 20 percent.

Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by Will on Nov 19th, 2005, 4:35pm

The comic book market is arguably dead everywhere -- I don't know if you'd think the US was all that much bigger if you encountered it on a store to store basis (I mean that, of course, on the basis of relative logistical size only; not sum total but of a microcosm). The excess of the 90s killed much of it off.

You can find a few big stores and some smaller ones in most areas, but it used to be that any supermarket or newstand would have many comics -- no longer the case, sadly. Not a mass market item, it's become more of a niche hobby than ever before. The number comic book or trading card shops overall is much smaller now as well.

The way the big two companies are being run is arguably the reason for the massive loss of cultural penetration as an art form at the moment. They've done decently with translating big properties to other mediums, but the base medium is becoming more and more of an afterthought.

As far as the first paragraph, I could be wrong -- there's probably pretty good chance that this is the biggest market even when the logistics of landmass are broken down to create parity with any other country (I guess that would be a state by state call then, whereas taken as a whole the outcome is in no doubt whatsoever), and I suppose what I meant is that the difference is likely not nearly as striking as it was only a few years ago (but still striking..?) -- I have no idea how big or small the comic book industry is overseas in whatever given country, but it certainly has shrunk vastly over here in the last 10-12 years.

Point? This industry remains in trouble generally. I don't think it can afford to shrink much more.

Damn, if I'm not posting the 200th reply on this thread. Weird ass thread this is, man. Always was, always is.

Now, on to my intention for this post. Doesn't anyone have the feeling the Squad is becoming more boring than it used to be? I do. I saw this place as somewhere where friends of mine were. We used to have interesting conversations, seemed to know each other personally, posted intriguing facts, rumors or reviews, etcetera.
Nowadays that feeling of closeness has left me. I have the feeling we aren't having conversations again - just discussions (e.g., about a review or continuity) - or that we just post random loose facts instead of performing some sort of dialogue - I should also admit that I also do not engage in that much dialogue, anymore.

What's up with that? Why and how is the Squad like this? We have the loss of some cool members (Dr Mafune, practically artes, practically BIF, Miss Harley, WCAsnikt, TheDarknight5, Spyke, Sinistergrin) but we also have seen quite a lot of new faces that are just as cool. So, how come the Squad to me feels a lot less close?
Damned if I know. If I knew what it was, I'd change it. Sure you can say that with new faces, of course it feels like you know the members less - because they're new. But still, the Squad doesn't draw my in as much as it did before.

Do any of you feel that way? Could be that it has to do with the fact that the Squad was down so much before? Or any other reason? No reason? Or don't you even see what I'm now saying?

TheDarknight5 once posted something really brilliant:
"I wish I double-teamed a girl with myself, so that I could high five myself over her back."
Man, that was brilliant cheesy.

What did you all get for Christmas, by the way? We stopped celebrating it in a big way so I didn't get any gifts, but my girlfriend surprised me with one. I got an ordner with on the covers all drawings by her. She made so that I have somewhere to store all my drawings -- I have to draw a lot more to fill this ordner wink.

Just some more days until the new year and then I'm already 21. Damn. I'm not looking forward to celebrating my birthday. It's the first time I don't feel like it. Weird.

Sorry man, I just had to do this.

Hell, I feel so f'ing disappointed in the people I know as of late, it's bringng me down. I feel partially down over a large area of my life and I hate it cheesy.

The President that cried 'terrorist'.

Do you also have the feeling this terrorism thing has gone on long enough? I mean, we can all stop getting afraid of the word 'terrorist' every time we hear it. Terrorists are the new cool and they know it: the media are full of them every time there's a possibility of a terrorist strike and people are terrified of just the thought of them.
Terrorism is here to stay.
That doesn't mean we should get in a fit every time we hear the word, right? We shouldn't get afraid every time someone forgets a suitcase on the trainstation or is born in Iraq. The thing I fear is that people will habituate to these words and not react properly or react too late when the time comes there really is another terrorist strike, wherever it may occur.

What do you think on the subject of terrorism? Is what I'm saying utter bullshit? It very well could be. I'm also here to start a conversation between intellects with different views to get all perspectives and sides known.

Suicidegirls.com? Elaborate, gerne, Mein Freund...

The two courses of my study I'm following currently kickass. One looks at our Consciousness, how it is defined, what being conscious and unconscious of something is, and stuff like that. The other course deals with another question: (how) are we different from machines and their Artificial Intelligence? The technological advances we have made predict that in 10 years time, computers will have the same amount of capacity we humans have.
I'll not bore you with details, but stuff I can relate to these courses are Ghost in the Shell, WE3 (Morrison) Space Oddysee and the likes. Very, very interesting to say the least.

Since my last post, it turned out I didn't need to go to Jury Duty so I had the whole day off. This past December at Target wasn't so bad thanks to the grand opening of a Super Target a few miles away.

For Christmas, I received $100+ in gift certificates at Gamestop. So far I've only used them towards the Mega Man X Collection.

This past week, I added RAM to the comp. and brought my Mazda in for its first major repair service (radiator leak). In the meantime I've saving up for the San Diego ComicCon in July ( my first time in California) and wondering when I'll get off my ass and install a new printer/scanner and reveal the real reason why Snipe lives in Tennessee.

I swiped these from another message board out there...

Batman isn't a creature of the night. The night approaches Batman carefully avoiding any eye contact.

Death is scared of the Batman. That's why he gave back Jason Todd.

Batman doesn't enjoy anything.

Batman pities more fools before 9 AM than Mr. T does all day. He just doesn't have to advertise it.

Batman doesn't dress like a bat to instill fear. That's why bats dress like him.

The Empire State Building was built so that Batman could perch broodily on its ramparts. If not for Batman, the borough of Manhattan would be very, very short.

Batman doesn't need superpowers; superpowers need Batman.

Only one person has ever been known to answer the "Who would win in a fight - Batman or Superman?" question with "Superman".

Batman didn't enjoy hurting Martha Kent, but examples must be made.

Q: Pirates vs. ninjas?
A: Batman.

Batman is the only living person who is known to have deflected Chuck Norris' roundhouse kick.

The Batmobile is black because Batman couldn't get it in a darker color.

Batman wears black because all other colors flee at his approach.

Batman's submission to "Junkyard Wars" was rejected for being too implausible.

Batman does not use hair product. His hair does what it is told.

There are infinitely many universes. The only thing that all these universes have in common is that each has a Batman.

Batman needs a Robin.

Batman's utility belt? Filled with Jolly Ranchers.

Batman does not really have a kryptonite ring. It's made of apple-flavored candy. He just intimidates Superman into losing his powers and feeling deathly ill.

Batman does not wear underpants beneath his costume as to not have noticeable panty-lines.

Crime does not occur during the day, in deference to Batman being too cool to be seen in daylight.

The last person to say "Smile!" to Batman is still in physical therapy, but hopes to regain full use of their spine soon.

Batman once caused Mr. Freeze to make Yellow Snow.

Batman makes Poison Ivy itch.

Batman doesn't kill. He prefers to make people wish they were dead.

Batman was happier in the sixties. There may have been drugs involved.

Batman has studied every kind of martial art. He spent three weeks on fighting with cherries alone. (Red and black.) And he always remembers to peel the banana.

The Justice League all wear Batman underoos.

After what Batman did to The Penguin, real penguins decided to move to Antartica - just in case....

Batman isn't crazy like a fox. Foxes wish they were crazy like Batman.

Spider-Man's suit in 3 will be the Spidey suit from the other films colored black. Cue outraged fans claiming that Raimi stabbed them in the back by not giving a Symbiote Suit that looks *exactly* like the one Spidey wore in the comics. All I've heard are rumors about who's going to play Ava (I've heard Selma Heyek and Angelina Jolie the most, I'd prefer Heyek, but I'll bet it's going to be Jolie).

Yes, there's new content--a Nancy Callahan story about how she changed after That Yellow Bastard. Last I heard, they're also going to have some Delia/"Blue Eyes" stories thrown in as well.

defenitely better than jay and bob. i actually liked jay and bob, but im not the biggest fan of dopey slapstick...but it was still funny. clerks 2 is good....but a lot of the humor int he first half, while funny, just seemed forced, like kevin is trying to fill his status quo of raunchy jokes and pop culture references....the second half was a lot better and pretty damn funny. it worth checking out, especially if your a smith fan.

I'm signed up for Comic-Con on Friday-Sunday. I'll be the guy wearing the Batman shirt who barely says anything.

This will be my first trip to California so I'm nervous and excited at the same time.I'm been saving up for this trip since February hence my long absence from the boards. I've also slept longer lately (8.5-9 hours) and lost weight (from 198 pounds down to 175). This could also be a result of stress - about half of the staff at work left.Remember when I was the hopeless one looking for a job? Now I'm considered one of the veteran experts.

One guy is actually giving me money to buy him things related to The Incredible Hulk. Others are jealous that I'll be there to see Ultimate Avengers 2.

TJ:
Awesome, awesome, totally awesome. I love the dynamics of your pages - the perspectives are very cool, the lay-outs, the facial expressions, and the humourous last panel. I like it.

I agree with Clerk and Snipe's comment on Black Canary, but toally see your viewpoint. I think you can be expected to hear about this when showing your portfolio, though.

Another thing I'd like to comment on -- but I may see this wrong -- are some of the proportions. For example: page 6, when the thug is grabbing his knife. He has a hand that is just bigger than his chin. My hand goes, when as a fist, from my chin to the tip of my nose. And that's when they're on top of each other -- your picture also needs to account for depth and things that are closer need to be depicted even bigger.
Those are just details, but worthy of pointing out nonetheless, methinks. I don't see this happening somewhere else on these pages, so that's good. But on the other hand, it's inconsistent.

I love that you manage to tell the story without words. I only noticed just now - which is praise on its own - but I think it's no small feat. I love the black canaries behind Black Canary, "dirtb", the cigerette of the running thug hanging in the air, the way hair flows naturally (e.g., page 7 panel 1), the big, dorky, hunkin' heart and "End".

I hope that helped somewhat.
Also: perhaps a nice thread for coming weekend.

I saw this file when on the Newsarama boards whilst discussing a comic.
Nasty!

It compares pictures done by Liefeld and pictures done by others. The real irony of it all was that it came up in a thread where Liefeld himself accussed Keith Giffen of plagiarism. (More details in this Newsarama thread.)

Like Snipe said, that's great news. Keep up the good work. What else did you do at the con?

I got back on Tuesday. I had planned on going to nine panels and I made it to all nine. I don't have much time right now but I promise to leave some general comments tomorrow.

Also a heads-up: Joe Quesada of Marvel is a guest on tonight's episode of The Colbert Report. 11:30 p.m. EST on Comedy Central. I believe it reruns at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow.

EDIT: Here are the panels I went to. I have pages and pages of notes, but here's a little taste:

Friday

Bruce Timm Retrospective - I only saw the last 20 minutes.

SNL TV Funhouse with Robert Smigel - Jean Schulz, widow of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, was in attendance.)

Saturday

Toonami Jetstream - I saw the first episode of MAR and received a free Toonami hat.

The Simpsons - My favorite panel. Some rough cut clips of The Simpsons movie were shown.

Viz Media Shonen Jump panel -I had no idea there were so many female fans of Rurouni Kenshin. Nobuhiro Watsuki seemed like a nice guy. No photography was allowed.

Funimation - I enjoyed the panel, but it seemed like no one else did. It was as if they were only there to watch anime and not listen to what the panelists had to say.

Adult Swim - I just made it to this one. They showed a clip from the ATHF movie and clips of upcoming shows (the crowd was completely silent once the 12 oz. mouse sequence ended).

The Batman - A real treat for me since I've only seen the episodes on CN. I left right before they premiered the Teen Titans movie (it was late).

Sunday

DC: The Big Three - Fun panel with mostly Q and A with the panelists for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. People loved Grant Morrison and Morrison loved Bale in Batman Begins.

Mondo Marvel - Unlike DC, they used their screen to showcase upcoming titles and covers with ongoing series. Entertaining, but lacked the enthusiasm of the DC panel.

GAH!
I'm working third shift this week. I volunteered (yes, volunteered) again (second time) when our normal guy wanted a week off. It's nice and quiet - nothing like our normal hectic days. Sort of a vacation.
Anyway, it's 3 till 4 (am) and I'm upgrading workstations from my desk (remote-controlling). In all seriousness, there's only like 2 hours of real work which needs to be done during our 3rd, so I'm getting some stuff done I wouldn't be able to during the day.
It just sucks to be awake right now angry
Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by TheMidnighter on Aug 14th, 2006, 9:45pm

In the same category (i.e., 'being awake at extreme times'), it is now 05:45 AM and I have been awake since Midnight after having slept for 2 hours. I have earinfections on both ears and especially the one in my left is really helping me stay awake...

Anyway, I have been on holiday in Cannes, France the past week and it was splendid. Nothing more to add that would interest you, but it was very, very nice.

Here's a cool three-panel comic. I don't know if I've already showed it, but I think it's great fun -- the logic in it is outstanding.
User Image

I'm also going to get more sketches done by an amazing artist! He's swapping a comicbook of mine for three sketches. One of my requests was a sektch of a Batfamily groupshot, done in the style of the animated series. And he's actually going for it! I'm really interested in finding how it will turn out.

How are all your lives revolving?

If you could decipher those ramblings, I had my pain in the ass wisdom tooth (yes singular cry the dentist could only get to the one that was giving me problems... and had to cut bone to get THAT one out.) removed today. The novocaine wore off on my drive home from getting my prescriptions filled. That was hell. Or I should say PART of the novocaine wore off, as the front of my mouth was still numb when I got home and took my pills, making it really hard to try to drink out of a can... cry And now that the novocaine has completely worn off, i'm in such severe pain I don't even know if it was worth it. Fuck it fucking hurts.

A girl I know couldn't sleep Thursday on Fridaynight because of her.......... wisdomteeth. It's a global conspiracy, I tell ya! (Because, you know, I'm from The Netherlands.)
I actually got rid of mine years ago when I was 18, so I guess I'm one of the chosen ones to free the world after the takeover has occured, and am destined to pioneer the evolved human race into the next era of mankind. Looking forward to that, I am.

I've posted 10 posts in three months: that's just horrible. Let's try and fill in the blanks about stuff that interests you: my life.

cool

Three months ago I was studying hard on the subjects Neuroscience in Action (a course about brain areas, their functions, how behaviour or diseases such as Parkinson's can be explained by brainfunction, and more) and Research Methods of Biological Psychology (e.g., fMRI, TMS, EEG, their pros & cons, and their uses). I've passed both tests (the latter with a 9, so I'm content with that one).
Right now I'm also studying hard, only with the two courses I have now: Theoretical Perspectives of Biological Psychology (most uninteresting course of the Bachelor) and Statistics III (very nice; I'll pass this one for sure).

I have been doing more music and theater in Maastricht, which came to a climax (nut not an end) yesterday evening: I performed on an open stage with a guitarplayer and singer (one own song and Everlong by the Foo Fighters) which went very well; and immediatly afterwards I performed with 'De Kamelen' (The Camels; a pun towards a nationally well-known improvisational Dutch television show, 'De Lama's,' The Lama's), an improvisationaltheater act with members from our student theater association. Both went very well, and I'm looking forward to performing more with these groups.
I'm also hoping the videomaterial is useful.

My landlord threw away my bike so until I buy another one, I'm walking everything.

Life is boring during the holidays.
I feel unmotivated to do anything. I really want to start working on my bachelorthesis, but I don't wish to start reading and looking for additional literature (I can do it later). My parental town is boring. The only thing to do is read comics I haven't read yet (which, luckily, is quite a bunch which means I actually have my time scheduled for the rest of the holiday).

I'll become 22 soon. Does anyone know something exciting to do with friends inside your room from 18:00 until whenever that does not involve being drunk or stoned? I have a lot of female friends and not that many male friends, so don't be affraid to provide more... 'exotic' suggestions.
Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by TheMidnighter on Jan 2nd, 2007, 08:48am

Did you all have as good a new year's eve as I did? I ate fish with a lot of friends, then there was the actual new year and lighting some 'roll of bangers' (no idea what they're called in English). And we ended the night and the first morning with dancing until 05:15 on great, great, great music.
Lovely.

And now I'm already 22. Damn! Let's hope the party will be cool. I'm going to make my own board- and cardgames like Trivial Pursuit or 'Kwartet' (no idea if it's a game overseas) with my own made up questions and cards. No idea if it'll be fun, but I'll try to make the games these days and assess if they'll be cool.

And I've got 2½ years of X-Men, Spider-Man and Batman comics to read. I'll never get it done before the holiday is finished!
I am up to date with my Ultimate titles, fortunately.

So, how was your new year?
Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by snipe on Jan 2nd, 2007, 12:10pm

I had a pretty good holiday. I took the week off between Christmas and New Year (I'm back at the office now), so I got to spend some time with the wife. We watched some Superman and Justice League TAS seasons and lounged a lot.
And read a lot of comics. I'd planned on getting through all the OYL stuff for the site, but stopped one issue short (Guy Gardner 2 of 2).
Oh, and Dirk - don't complain about 22. My next birthday will be 30. I'll trade with you wink

Kind of on a whim, the wife and I went to Memphis today. Stopped by the comic shop and picked up some bags & boards, got some back issues (Deathstroke, Dr. Fate, Hawkman), and found that GL tpb I've been looking for - Brother's Keeper.
We had some Red Lobster and went to the mall. I completely geeked out. We were in Spencers and they had the McFarlane-esque Jimmy Page figure. I seriously weezed when I saw it. I got it, the Justice / Alex Ross Batman figure (which I somehow missed when it came out), got an Incredibles shirt (red with the logo), and went to Fye (generic mall cd / dvd shop). They had some cd box sets on sale cheap. Really cheap. 4cd Ray Charles: $5. 4cd classic blues: $5. 4cd Rat Pack (Sinatra, Davis, Martin, etc.): $5.
We both spent way too much money, but had a blast.

I'm amazed everyday. Amazed that she hasn't left me. And maybe I've grown up. I was never a huge swinger, but I never had to be alone if I didn't want to. Does any one of you guys and gals have any experience with making a cool 'illustration' of a sentence? It needn't be anything fancy, but I just want to try and have a quote on the cover of my thesis.

So, if any of you would not object to making a beautiful, but certainly not fancy/flashy (less is more) illustration with greyish/white letters (as if it is on the background) and a white background of the sentence:
Quote:
The universe doesn't have to make sense to you,
it just has to make sense.

2007 was such a crappy year for me and I keep hoping 2008 would be better. On Sunday, I received news that my father passed away. The funeral was on Wednesday and though I know he is gone, it's like I'm living in a bad dream. Today would have been his 59th birthday and I feel so empty. He always told me and others how proud he was of me. We grew more and more distant over the years so I wonder if he's still proud now that he knows everything I've done and haven't done with my life.

I miss him so much.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I think the growing away from your parents thing is simply a part of life. I don't feel I have much in common with my family and I don't see them as much as I should. That doesn't change the way I feel about them or the way they feel about me.
Here's the part where I should give some incouraging words, but nothing's going to make you feel better right now except time. Focus on the positive and on the good times you guys shared. Honor his memory.

Re: night owl, volume 3

Blegh, this night sucks. It's 06h13 and I am not sleepy at all. Takes me back to my puberty and the endless mornings of newspaper delivery!

The reason for that is probably because I woke up pretty late this morning (it was noon) and I have been working on a song. I have recently given up hope of finding a good band in the near future and have therefore started composing music on the computer. I have to say: it's easier than I imagined.

Probably because the program I'm working with is easy, but I never thought that I, as a drummer, would be able to come up with good melodies. Yet, I have done so. I have finished one song (well, actually two, but the first one was really quick and pretty boring; more to see how the program worked) which is a real ambient-type song -- the type of music I can relax to, or even go to sleep to (usually not a good sign). I am now busy with the second song, which is more... happy, I guess. A nice organ melody, cool bassline and some nice drums, although I am planning on recording drums myself.

I think that is the nicest thing to do: create music that I like on the laptop, take it to a stage along with my drums and bassguitar, and just play stuff. I would love to incorporate live playing with the music I have made. I think I could make that work.

Once I have anything available online, I would love to hear some comments.

3 am... That sucks.
This past month I worked every day from nine to six. Not different from usual, but I was so exhausted, I kept falling asleep at ten in the evening. I guess repeatedly explaining programming to students who just don't get it, drains me.
No nite owl trophy for me this last month.

To make up for it, I give you all this video. If you ever impregnate someone unintentionally, or get impregnated unintentionally, know that you can make some good use of the child.

Aside from the video game and (just recently) the comic movie adaptation threads, I barely see posts here from you guys.

I've been staying up lately for 1 a.m. sales at Woot.com (I got three MST3K boxsets [with Tom Servo figurine] for $75 cheesy ) so I'm open to hearing from you guys again.

Bad news: I'm not going to Comic Con. sad

Good news: It's "Batman Month" at my local comic book store (tatescomics.com) so EVERYTHING Batman related is 20% off.

And I'm on vacation. Huzzah.

It's past midnight here. Can't wait for the comic industry to rape more of our beloved characters and beloved worlds in the next year, and for us to unanimously hate the comics they produce even though we've stopped buying them.

In other words, happy 2013, guys and gals.

Seeing as this is the most 'random' topic on here:

I'm starting my PhD in September 2013. In London, Ontario, Canada! You know how f'ing close that is to all of you? We could meet at comic conventions without me flying for more than 10 hours from here (Belgium and The Netherlands).

I'll be investigating how our brains process musical information, rhythms in particular. Soon you guys will be able to read more gems like this one.

So. F'ing. Excited.

.... and 2013 is even worse. Target is to the point where they constantly change the rules and nothing is ever right. It's affected me mentally that I'm just exhausted when I get home and I find it hard to focus on having a life. I feel like the nine years I've been there was all for nothing.

I really like working with the vendors who visit the store since they have a drive to succeed unlike the people I work with who just pass their work off (usually to me). The Hasbro rep told me there was a job opening up and put it a word for me. The following week he comes in along with his district manager to see how I operate. He gave me his card and told me to call with any questions.

I called and found out about the position. It's basically part time work and I would make 50% less compared to my [barely] fulltime position at Target (even though Hasbro pays more per hour). There is no health insurance because I am part time; however, there are fulltime hours during seasonal work in October-December. He offered me to think about the position for a few days and call him back with my decision. If I accept the job, I would start in mid August.

I don't know what to do. Getting the Target job was hard enough but the Hasbro job would put more wear on my car (I would travel 30 minutes on the interstate to start work) and less wear on me physically (i.e. less scrapes and tearing of my clothes). It also sounds like it is less stressful except for the money part and the lack of insurance. It would also mean I would have to give up my gym membership which I have not used much thanks to Target's aggressiveness. I regret every day when I feel like I can't go.

I want to leave Target by October no matter what. Last Halloween, I nearly ripped my fingers and arms off trying to get something done without equipment (which, btw, is becoming the norm when people in other departments are hiding them). I don't want to go through that again and would rather be unemployed. Hell, I don't even know how to even put in a two week's notice.

Man, that's a crappy situation to be in. I've been at the same job for 12 years now. All my adult life. I don't know anything else, but sometimes, I feel like I need out. Pay is good, benefits are good, people I work with are good.
Re: night owl, volume 3

I cannot advice you to stay at a place you feel like crap. Don't think the Hasbro position will forever be part-time. It might be.

Think of it this way: they would take a larger risk if they offered you a full-time job, with all the perks and insurance that comes with it, immediately. It's less risky for Hasbro to offer you a part-time position. That way, they take less risk but you can still prove yourself. Hopefully, it's a position you can grow in.

If the Hasbro offer gives you the opportunity to spend more time on what you actually enjoy at Target (e.g., talking to vendors) and you spend more time with people that want to excel in life, I'd say it might not be a bad choice to take the job. especially if you feel you cannot grow more in Target and Hasbro does offer that opportunity.
Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by JTurner954 on Jul 31st, 2013, 06:34am

When I talked to the Hasbro manager originally, he said there wasn't much growth opportunity (a couple of sites that review the company said the same thing). I think a lot of what you said is right, especially about this eventually becoming fulltime and this being an opportunity to prove myself.

On Monday, I mentioned my interest in putting in a two week notice to the H.R. person and she freaked out. She wants to try and remedy the situation where she would get with them to change things and get with me on Thursdays to follow up.

It sounds nice, but how do I know if things don't revert back? I said this to her and she wants me to give them a chance and if things really don't work, I am free to give notice.

Part of me still wants to leave though. Too bad I don't know if the new job would be a sure thing that becomes a better choice.

I did not mention the Hasbro offer to her (she did ask if I was getting another job to which I said no). I found out that another person who put in their two week's and has since left was not convinced to stay by HR like I was.

In an ironic twist, the district manager who oversees the stores in the county resigned on Monday. Supposedly it was because the feedback scores from employees was so low that she felt embarrassed and left. She was with the company longer than me.

But after talking with Mom, it looks like I am going to stay with them since Hasbro is not offering health insurance for part timers. Add that with the constant problems I have with the car (for a while I was spending $500 a month on repairs) and my fate is revealed. The Hasbro manager wanted me to give him an answer in a few days while it's been a week now. Based on that, I'm probably looking bad in his eyes already.

BTW, I shared my situation with another message board I'm a part of and they said go with Hasbro too (although I did not reveal the lack of insurance part). Mom is the only one who said differently. Seems like she wants me to work more for the money.

It's a shame too. I think saying I work for Hasbro sounds better than saying I work for Target. I will probably see the Hasbro vendor at work today. I'm thinking if I did tell H.R. I received an offer with them, then I would be re-assigned so I couldn't help them when they come into the store anymore.

Things to consider:
1. work sucks. No matter what you do, no matter where you work, it sucks. If it didn't, they wouldn't have to pay you to show up and do it.

2. you spend a lot of time at work. A LOT. If it's full time, at least 40 hours per week.

Basically, it's about finding the place that sucks the least comparatively.
Re: night owl, volume 3
Post by TheMidnighter on Aug 1st, 2013, 04:07am

Is it only a short period you've disliked working at Target or have you wrestled with it for a much longer time? If it's only a short while, you might figure it could be only temporary.

I don't necessarily agree with snipe's comment that work "sucks." Sure, you won't always enjoy work. Hell, you'll loathe going to work at times. I doubt snipe meant this but the way his comments are worded, it might sound as if you should be happy with work and pay no matter how shitty you feel doing it.

I feel there should be at least some enjoyment, and you should strive for a positive 'Enjoyment : Spite' ratio. My brother says he states a ratio for himself he will be content with (e.g., 60% good, 40% sucky) and that job will be enough. You might not agree, you might look for another ratio but it does exemplify the point I want to make: work will never be amazing all the time, but find a balance of joy and dislike that works for you. If your work at Target doesn't reach the minimum enjoyment you want/need/crave, I don't think it will be worth the time of your life you spend on it.

Now, like I said, I don't necessarily think snipe meant you should work even if you hate it 100% of the time, but I would attest to the claim that work will, at times, always suck.

Unless you get paid for being fed by and receive physical pleasure from beautiful girls. but I haven't heard of any such endeavor.

Post by JTurner954 on Sep 10th, 2013, 7:44pm

Of the 9 1/2 years I've been there, I'd say this feeling of disgust started three years ago but it truly hit me physically last year. I've since tried to walk out twice with different people stopping me with promises on how "it's only temporary".

Since my last post, I went ahead and called the Hasbro manager to deny the offer.
I mentioned that the HR person wanted to try to work things out and if it was any consolation, I can still help them when they come into the store. He thanked me for calling him and said he would keep my name on file for future reference. Even without the insurance, I would have taken the position. If I knew the car would be more dependable (it hasn't given me problems since June), it would have made the decision easier.

Since then it has been hell at Target. As I suspected, things worked for about a week. My scheduled hours are random and I'm constantly covering people's breaks (no one still covers mine so I've hit meal compliance multiple times). If I try to get out of something, I'm told I'm the only person available. Even if people are there, it takes multiple calls to get an answer from someone - even if I'm not the one calling for someone. Communication is terrible (it's more like yelling than speaking) and the management seems to make up rules as they go. I am so ready to leave this place.

I heard some good things about Linkedin and my uncle sent me an invite so I am starting to create a profile. I'm noticing people I haven't heard from in a while are members. I guess it doesn't hurt to put something down and see if a better opportunity opens.

Re: night owl, volume 3

The only stores around are super stores. People have been leaving since January- whether it was to go to those (announced as recently as last week where a team member is becoming an HR at a "nearby" store) or someplace entirely like the Super Walmart that opened down the street earlier this year. One guy left Electronics to work security for said Walmart while another moved out of state. Right now my Target is sandwiched between two Walmarts which are closer to other Targets.

I was looking for openings in Palm Beach since we were supposedly going to move up there. That's why the Hasbro gig was so inviting to me; that job would be in the vicinity so the long drives wouldn't be as long once the move happened.

I really don't want to stay with Target for the rest of my life. Between all the people coming and going and telling me how surprised they are that I'm still there, the place is more of a stepping stone for something better. Hell, my original plan was to work there and use the money towards college. I was doing that for the longest time until my pay was reduced and the car bills increased. It also didn't help that I wasn't completely sure what I would pursue afterwards (I am six credits away from getting my associates) and hearing news of people who can't find jobs even with a degree.

I'm thinking of making Monday my last day - just in time for my birthday.

So, I bought a new house. I put mine on the market over the summer at the same time my girlfriend did. Hers sold first, so she and her daughter moved in with me while mine sold.
Much bigger. We have our side, her daughter (age 17) has her own side so neither of us disturb the other with noise.
I also have a huge upstairs "loft" with my computer, tv, books, etc. Once I get everything situated, I'll probably get some pictures up.
The fun part of the whole thing is we had to be out of my house last Friday at 1:30pm and couldn't be in the new one until Sunday 9pm. it's been a long week.

Did you get to talk to Neal Adams, snipe? I know I loved meeting the man during the Toronto Comic Convention last year.

Since January I have worked at a high school for children with autism. During Summer break I received an offer from a college to start working there. The pay is better, it is more in line with my studies and expertise, and there is more potential for growth. So even though I had a great time working at the special needs high school, I switched jobs.

September is the final month at my old job as well as my first month of my new job. Plus I decided to start a study to become a licensed mathematics teacher. In other words, this is an especially hectic month for me. This too shall pass...

After finishing Preacher, I'm kind of looking forward to reading some more comic books when I have the time. I was hoping the second deluxe hardcover for Saga would be out by the end of the year but I haven't seen any solicitations for it yet. My girlfriend is reading the five (old) Batman: No Man's Land trades and absolutely digging them.

Yes, actually. I'd heard horror stories about people trying to, mostly about his wife and her wanting to keep the line moving. This was a smaller convention with no lines, and I was able to go right up to him and have a bit of a conversation.
Pretty nice guy. Talked more than I wanted him to. He seems to be one of those who don't want things to change. I told him I was a Nightwing fan, and he told me that Dick Grayson was Robin, that Batman was 29 and that if writers wanted new characters, then they should be creative and create new characters without messing with the old ones.
In other words, characters shouldn't be allowed to grow, and the heroes should never be in real danger.

Tonight I tried out with a band. Four people I had never met before, but they like and play Porcupine Tree, Tool, Foo Fighters and the likes, so I was interested.

I reheasred five songs by Foo Fighters, 30 Seconds to Mars, Panic at the Disco, Muse and Paramore. All seemed to go really well. We played through the fice songs. Then they asked: how about Tool? They wanted to play Forty-Six & 2. I said I hadn't practised so that I might be a tad rusty, but that I knew the song.

I completely nailed that drumsolo intermezzo.

After we finished playing that song, I felt so happy. They were flabbergasted too. Their previous drummer always screwed it up, they said. Playing the Forty-Six & 2 solo is one to take off the bucket list.

All in all, a fun night. I'm glad to be back playing the drums. Also, I'm happy to have an awesome drumkit to play on.
