No spoilers in my one today.

Once again, I really don't understand the almost universally scathing reviews. Everywhere I go, I see people saying that the only people liking this film are DC fanboys who will defend anything DC does. It's clear that's not us, and every visitor to this site knows that's definitely not me. wink Heh.

But yeah, I enjoyed it.

Yes I've seen the plot a thousand times before; a team of people making their way from one place to another to stop a big evil thing was beat for beat like so many others. But I have seen a lot of films much worse than this that are universally praised. Is there some sort of agenda here against DC films?

Again I'll keep comparing the Nolan films to the current DC output just because of how critically acclaimed they were. Yes, the Nolan films from a production standpoint are in a whole other league with their artistic pursuit of real filmmaking rather than relying on lazy CG, inarguably they are better made films. But I stand by my opinion that the Nolan films are badly written with their reliance on battering you over the head with how 'clever' they're being rather than letting the audience work it out. They are extremely verbose with unnecessary dialogue that is far less clever than it thinks it is - all tell, no show - quite the opposite of the zenith of DC films, Batman Returns. No, Suicide Squad was not high art, but I still thought it was better written with more character depth than the dry Nolan portrayals. Yet those films are universally praised.

Suicide Squad had bad CG and a generic plot. But I enjoyed the characters which carried the film the whole way through. So while I had issues with the film, overall I enjoyed it.

I'm the opposite of a DC fanboy, I will never defend them just because it's DC. I'm one of their biggest critics when I think they are getting it wrong (and they get it wrong a lot), but I really don't understand the hate BvS and SS are getting.

Man Of Steel was a bad film, there is no doubt about that. But BvS was a massive improvement and SS was an enjoyable side story.

It seems like it has become the fashionable thing to hate DC films at the moment. I don't know if it is because Marvel films are so successful that anything Not-Marvel is automatically disregarded by default. Or I don't know if it is because the Nolan Trilogy was so successful that anything Not-Nolan is automatically disregarded by default.

The biggest problem is that two consecutively released films so scathingly received is going to have Warner Executives in a massive panic. And studio interference sacrificing artistic vision very rarely ends well.

EDIT - Oh, and Katana was way better here than in Beware The Batman!

This. After seeing the film and then reading the reviews, I had to wonder if all the film critics are secretly working for Disney. rolleyes

Anyway, I didn't love the film, but I certainly didn't hate it either. I thought it was pretty fun. As expected, Harley Quinn stole the show. I want more of her, now. Leto's Joker was okay, though doesn't compare to Ledger's portrayal. I would have liked to see more of him as well, but apparently a lot of his scenes were cut, which is frustrating. I thought Killer Croc was quite awful. Probably the worst thing about the movie. Completely useless. They should have left him in the sewer. Captain Boomerang's portrayal was spot-on. I was also pleasantly surprised with Will Smith's Deadshot. I was skeptical about his casting but he did quite well. I also wish there was more Batman. Everything needs more Batman.

I agree ... with the critics.

I didn't like Suicide Squad (but I did like Batman v. Superman). Only a few characters were worth watching in this: Deadshot, Harley, Waller, and Diablo. Everyone else was a waste of time, especially Killer Croc, Slipknot, and Boomerang.

What about Joker you ask? He has enough screen time. He just didn't do that much. For that reason I can't judge of Leto was bad or did a good job at the amount he was given.

I almost didn't include Diablo because it took a long time for the movie to have some backstory on him. Enchantress was a terrible villain and even though Harley was good, her moments were very hit or miss: She goes in and out of turning into Marissa Tomei from My Cousin Vinny. "Own your shit."

I won't go further in without spoiling so I will say my main problem with SS isn't with the look, the sound, or the acting. It's with consistency. It honestly felt like I was watching every deleted scene integrated with a movie that could have been better if it was 30-45 minutes shorter.

Here's something I didn't expect to happen: The best moments (especially with Batman) were NOT shown in the commercials.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was fun. It introduced a shitload of characters people will never see otherwise.

/Still no Nightwing.
